Geologically, the islands sit on the African Tectonic Plate. However, they are culturally and politically linked to Europe. The region is an integral part of the European Union as an outermost region. It consists of several island groups. These include the islands of Madeira, Porto Santo, and the Desertas. The Savage Islands are also administered with this archipelago. The capital city is Funchal, which is located on the south coast of the main island.

The climate in Madeira is generally a mild or moderate subtropical climate. This environment features Mediterranean summer droughts and winter rain. Because the islands have varied elevations, many microclimates exist. A microclimate is a local area where the weather differs from the surrounding region.

High mountains create many different weather patterns across the landscape.

The islands are known for their lush flora and fauna. One famous example is the prehistoric laurel forest. This forest is classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its importance.

History suggests that people may have known about these islands long before official settlement. Ancient writings from 75 AD mention "Isles of the Blessed" in the Atlantic. Archaeological evidence also suggests Vikings might have visited between 900 and 1030. Medieval manuscripts from the 1300s, such as the Corbitis Atlas, show the islands.

These old texts used different names like Lecmane or Legnami. The official discovery occurred in 1418 during the Age of Discovery. Captains João Gonçalves Zarco and Tristão Vaz Teixeira were exploring the African coast. They worked for Prince Henry the Navigator. A storm drove them off course to the islands. They named one harbor "holy harbour" to thank God for their safety.

Settlement began shortly after the discovery, around 1420 or 1425. The first settlers were led by three governors: Zarco, Vaz Teixeira, and Bartolomeu Perestrelo. They were joined by families, fishermen, and peasant farmers. Many people left Portugal to find a better life after the Black Death. Initially, the settlers grew wheat for food and exported it to the mainland. Later, the economy shifted toward commercial crops to increase profits. This change was ordered by Henry the Navigator. The introduction of water-driven sugar mills revolutionized the local industry. Sugar production grew to over 6,000 arrobas by 1455. This era brought wealth to the city of Funchal.

The sugar trade attracted many people from across Europe. Merchants from Italy, Flanders, and Spain arrived to trade. This made Funchal a mandatory port for European trade routes. During this period, some sugar was cultivated using slave labor. This included Guanches from the Canary Islands and people captured by Barbary corsairs. However, slave owners were only a small minority of the population. By the 17th century, the economy changed again. Portuguese sugar production moved to Brazil and other areas. Madeira shifted its focus to vineyards. This created a famous "Wine Culture" and a new social class called the bourgeoisie. The Madeira wine became famous worldwide. It was even used for toasts during the American Declaration of Independence.

Tourism has become a major part of modern Madeiran life. The islands serve as a year-round resort for many visitors. In 2021, there were 148,000 visits from British tourists. There were also 113,000 visits from German tourists. The first tourist guide was published in 1850. Hotels were often started by British and German companies. One historic example is the Belmond Reid's Palace, which opened in 1891. Funchal is also a vital port for the cruise industry.

Large ships stop here while traveling between Europe, North Africa, and the Caribbean. The region also uses the International Business Centre to encourage trade through tax incentives.

Madeira has also experienced significant historical challenges. During World War I, the islands were affected by naval conflict. In December 1916, a German U-boat named U-38 entered Funchal harbour. The submarine torpedoed and sank three ships. These included a British cable-laying vessel and two French ships. The submarine also bombarded Funchal for two hours. Local batteries eventually forced the submarine to withdraw. Today, the region remains a prosperous and unique part of the Portuguese territory. It balances its rich history with a modern role in the European Union.
