Early settlements date back to 5500 BC. Various groups have shaped the land over many millennia. Pre-Celtic tribes lived there, including the Cynetes and the Lusitanians. The Celts later inhabited the north and center of the country. Around 200 BC, the Romans conquered the area during the Second Punic War. They renamed the region Portus Cale and included it in the province of Gallaecia.

Following the decline of the Roman Empire, different groups moved into the peninsula. Germanic tribes, such as the Suebi and the Visigoths, occupied the territory. The Suebi established a kingdom with its capital in Braga. Later, the Umayyad Caliphate expanded into the region in 726. This period of Moorish domination lasted until various smaller kingdoms emerged. During the Middle Ages, Viking incursions also raided the coastline. These raids even reached as far as Lisbon between the 9th and 11th centuries.

The Reconquista was a major turning point for the formation of the nation. This was a period when Christian forces reclaimed the peninsula from Moorish rule. In 868, the nobleman Vímara Peres reconquered Porto for the Kingdom of Asturias.

The modern political structure of Portugal has changed significantly over time. After being a kingdom for centuries, it became a republic. The nation experienced a period of dictatorship from 1926 until 1974. The overthrow of this regime enabled the establishment of a full democracy. Today, Portugal is a semi-presidential constitutional unitary republic. It operates as a multi-party representative democracy with four sovereignty bodies. These bodies include the president, the government, the parliament, and the judiciary. The national legislature is a unicameral body called the Assembly of the Republic.

Portugal is now a highly developed country with a complex economy. Its economic strength relies primarily on services, industry, and tourism.
