Lisbon is the capital and most populous city of Portugal.

It serves as the nation's political, economic, and cultural heart. The city sits on the northern shore of the River Tagus. It is located in the western part of the Iberian Peninsula. Lisbon is the only capital city along the Atlantic coast. The metropolitan area even reaches the Portuguese Riviera. This area includes Cabo da Roca, the westernmost point of continental Europe.

The city's history began thousands of years ago. During the Neolithic period, pre-Celtic tribes lived in the region. They built religious monuments like megaliths and dolmens. Later, Indo-European Celts arrived and mixed with these people. They formed Celtic-speaking tribes like the Cempsi or Sefes. Archaeological finds show Iron Age people lived on Castle Hill.

Evidence suggests a Phoenician trading post existed by 1000 BC. This post sat on the southern slope of the Castle hill. The sheltered Tagus River estuary provided a secure harbor. This made it an ideal spot for trading metals and salt. Some legends even claim the hero Ulysses founded the city.

The Roman Empire later transformed the settlement. After the Punic wars, Rome sought control of the Iberian Peninsula. They integrated the city into the empire as a municipium. It was given the name Felicitas Julia.

The city gained the privileges of Roman citizenship. Residents were exempt from certain taxes. Romans built a great theatre and many temples. They built temples to gods like Jupiter and Diana. They also built large apartment buildings called insulae. The city became a major center for trading goods like wine and garum. Garum was a highly prized fish sauce exported to Rome.

Following the fall of Rome, the city saw many changes. Germanic tribes like the Visigoths ruled the region. In the 8th century, Muslim forces captured the city. They built mosques and new city walls called the Cerca Moura.
