As of 2025, the city proper has over 3.4 million residents. The larger metropolitan area contains approximately 6.8 million people. This makes Madrid the second-largest city in the European Union. Its metropolitan area is the second-largest in the EU, following Paris.

The city's origins are a subject of much debate. The exact etymology of the name "Madrid" remains unknown. One theory suggests a Celtic origin from the word *Magetoritum. In this theory, the root "-ritu" means a ford. Another theory links the name to the Arabic word *maǧrà. This term means a water stream. A third possibility is a Mozarabic variant of the Latin *matricis. Like the Arabic term, this also means a water stream. These theories attempt to explain how the name evolved phonetically over time.

Archaeological evidence shows the site has been occupied since prehistoric times. Researchers have found Achelian occupations in the Jarama valley. There are also remains of Celtic Carpetani settlements and Roman villas. Visigoth remains include a basilica and three necropolises. The first historical document of an established settlement dates to the Muslim age. In the late 9th century, Muhammad I built a fortress near the river.

This fortress protected the border of Al-Andalus. It also served as a base for Muslim offensives.

Madrid's status changed significantly during the Middle Ages. Christians seized the town in 1083 or 1085. Following this, Christians occupied the center while others moved to suburbs. The city became a villa linked to the Crown in 1123. It gained the right to have representation in the courts of Castile in 1188. In 1309, the Courts of Castile convened there for the first time. A major turning point occurred in 1561. King Philip II established the permanent seat of the Hispanic Monarchy in Madrid.

King Charles III later implemented modern reforms for sewers and lighting. During the 19th century, the economy modernized through the railway. The introduction of trains helped Madrid become a logistics node. This allowed for the transport of fresh fish from the coasts. In the 1861 expansion, new neighborhoods like Ensanche were developed.
