As an autonomous region, it has its own local government and is a special territory of the European Union. The archipelago is part of the Macaronesia region. It consists of nine major volcanic islands and an islet cluster known as the Formigas.

These islands are organized into three distinct geographical groups. The western group includes Flores and Corvo. The central group contains Graciosa, Terceira, São Jorge, Pico, and Faial. The eastern group is made of São Miguel, Santa Maria, and the Formigas islets.

Geologically, the islands were formed through volcanic activity.

The archipelago sits atop the Azores triple junction. This is a seismically active plate boundary where three major tectonic plates meet: the North American, Eurasian, and Nubian plates. Because of this position, the region experiences geological movement. Mount Pico on Pico Island is the highest point in Portugal, reaching 2,351 meters.

If measured from their base at the bottom of the ocean to their peaks, these islands are among the tallest mountains on Earth.

The climate of the Azores is notably mild for its northern latitude. This is due to the influence of the Gulf Stream and its distance from large landmasses.

The marine influence keeps temperatures steady throughout the year. Daytime temperatures fluctuate based on the season, but it is generally a wet and cloudy environment.

This weather supports lush landscapes and diverse local flora.

History and discovery in the Azores involve many different theories. While the islands were officially populated under Prince Henry the Navigator in the 1400s, some evidence suggests earlier visits.

Archaeologist Nuno Ribeiro identified potential hypogea, or underground structures, on Corvo, Santa Maria, and Terceira. These structures were used by settlers to store grain. It is currently unclear if they are natural or human-made.

Furthermore, research on mouse mitochondrial DNA suggests a Scandinavian origin for local mice.

This, along with sediment core sampling, suggests a possible Norse settlement between 700 and 850 A.D. during a period of weaker westerly winds.

Formal Portuguese settlement began in the 15th century.

In 1436, Gonçalo Velho Cabral established colonies on Santa Maria and São Miguel. Settlers cleared the landscape to plant sugar cane, grapevines, and various grains. They also introduced livestock like cattle, sheep, and pigs.

A significant Flemish presence developed during this era. By 1490, approximately 2,000 Flemish people lived across several islands. Because of this, the archipelago was often called the Flemish Islands.

Life was often difficult due to natural disasters. In 1522, an earthquake and landslide in Vila Franca do Campo killed about 5,000 people.

This forced the capital to move to Ponta Delgada.

The islands also played a role in European political conflicts. During the Portuguese succession crisis of 1580, the Azores resisted Spanish rule under Philip II.

This period of Spanish administration is sometimes called the "Babylonian captivity" in the Azores. Local resistance, particularly on Terceira, helped maintain Portuguese influence. Later, in the 19th century, economic problems led to overpopulation. This caused many residents to emigrate to places like the United States, Canada, and Brazil.

Ships like those from the White Star Line helped transport people during this time.

Today, the economy of the Azores relies on several key sectors. Agriculture, dairy farming, and fishing remain vital industries.

Tourism has also become a major service activity. The islands serve as a beautiful destination for travelers.

The largest city is Ponta Delgada, which serves as a major urban center.
