Mid-Atlantic Ridge

earth science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

The Mid-Atlantic Ridge is a giant mountain range. It sits on the floor of the Atlantic Ocean. This ridge is part of the longest mountain range in the world. Most of it stays deep under the water. However, some parts rise above the sea level. Iceland is a famous example of this.

The ridge is a divergent boundary. This means it is a place where tectonic plates move apart. It is a very important part of our planet.

A deep rift valley runs along the center of the ridge. This valley marks the boundary between plates. Inside the Earth, hot magma moves upward. This magma reaches the seafloor and erupts as lava. The lava turns into new crustal material. This process makes the ocean floor grow wider.

This ridge sits on a bulge called the Mid-Atlantic Rise. Upward forces in the asthenosphere push the crust up. This creates the massive ridge we see today.

People have studied this ridge for a long time. Matthew Fontaine Maury first thought it was there in 1853. He used soundings from the USS Dolphin. Later, the HMS Challenger expedition confirmed it in 1872. A scientist named Charles Wyville Thomson led that team. They were looking for a place to put a telegraph cable.

In 1925, sonar also confirmed the ridge existed. Later, the German Meteor expedition found it reached the Indian Ocean.

In the 1950s, scientists mapped the ocean floor. Marie Tharp and Bruce Heezen worked on this. Maurice Ewing was also part of the team. They found the ridge had strange valleys and ridges. They saw that the central valley had many earthquakes. This discovery helped prove the theory of plate tectonics.

This ridge helped break up the supercontinent Pangaea. This happened between 200 and 160 million years ago. It is a key part of how our continents move.

You can find many islands near this underwater mountain range. Iceland is a large one where the ridge runs through. Other islands include the Azores and Saint Helena. You can also find Ascension Island and Tristan da Cunha. Even Bouvet Island is near the ridge in the south.

Some of these islands have very high peaks. For example, Iceland has a peak called Hvannadalshnúkur. These islands show us how the ridge works above water.
