They sit at the very end of the Tuamotu archipelago. Most of these islands are high and made of volcanic rock. They were once part of a huge volcano crater called a caldera. This old crater is still visible today by how the islands sit in the water. The group is divided into the Mangareva Islands and the Temoe atoll. Temoe is a quiet place with no people living there. It sits 45 km south-east of the Mangareva Islands.

Nature works in different ways across these islands. The high volcanic islands are covered in lush, green plants. However, the windward side of Mt. Duff is mostly dry grassland. The smaller coral islands have poor soil, so only coconut trees grow well there. These trees are used to make copra. The land has fewer animals like birds, insects, and lizards. But the water is very different and full of life. The lagoon is a paradise for divers because of the many colorful fish.

Long ago, people first arrived on these islands. Scientists think they may have come from the Society Islands around 1000 A.D. Early life on the islands was organized into different tribes. These tribes often fought with each other. In the early 1800s, the islands were under the influence of the Pomaré kings from Tahiti. Later, European explorers like James Wilson visited the area. Wilson named the islands after his role model, James Gambier.

In 1834, missionaries arrived to start a new way of life. They taught the people how to read and write. They also built many stone buildings like churches and cemeteries. One huge cathedral in Mangareva could hold more than 2,000 people.

The population changed a lot over time due to new diseases and people moving away. By 1881, the islands became part of France. Today, the main town is Rikitea on the island of Mangareva.

As of 2017, about 1,431 people lived in the islands.

Modern life in the Gambiers is linked to the sea. Many people work in pearl farming within the lagoons. The water there is relatively cool, which helps make high-quality pearls. There are 129 pearl farms in the area today. This work helps the population grow again. Travelers can reach the islands using the Totegegie Airport.
