Moorea is a beautiful volcanic island in French Polynesia.

It sits in the South Pacific, just northwest of the island of Tahiti. The name Moorea actually means "yellow lizard" in the Tahitian language. The island is about 16 km across. It is part of the Society Islands group. A coral reef circles the entire island. This reef creates a narrow lagoon along the shoreline.

This lagoon is easy to travel through with boats.

The island was formed by a volcano a long time ago.

It started as a shield volcano between 1.5 and 2.5 million years ago. This happened because of a hotspot in the Earth's mantle. Today, the island is very green and lush. The weather is tropical, warm, and very humid. Temperatures usually stay between 28 and 30 °C. The rainiest months are from December to February. A constant wind helps to keep the air moving.

People have lived on Moorea for a very long time.

Scientists think people arrived from Samoa and Tonga around 200 CE. Early society had different groups and powerful leaders. These leaders held both political and religious power. They built large religious structures called marae. These look like big stone step pyramids.
