This group includes five other inhabited islands named Alderney, Herm, Jethou, Lihou, and Sark. Most of the 63,950 people in the area live on Guernsey itself. The island is divided into ten different parishes. There is only one main town, which is called Saint Peter Port.

Life on the island has changed many times over thousands of years.

Long ago, around 6000 BC, rising seas separated these islands from mainland Europe. Neolithic farmers lived on the coasts and built stone structures called dolmens. Later, Roman traders used the island to move goods across long distances. A shipwreck named Asterix was found in the harbour at Saint Peter Port. This ship was likely a Roman cargo vessel from the 3rd century. Even the island's name comes from Old Norse words. The suffix "-ey" means island in that old language.

Guernsey has a very long and complex history.

In the Middle Ages, the island was part of the Duchy of Normandy. It was sometimes a place where pirates would hide. In 1204, the islands stayed loyal to the English crown instead of France. During the Second World War, things became very difficult. Nazi Germany invaded and occupied the island for five years. Many people, including 80 percent of the children, had to leave for England. The island was finally liberated on 9 May 1945.
