The island has a very interesting shape and size. It is about 162 kilometers long. The land rises up to high peaks. One peak reaches a height of 2,326 meters.

To the south of the island lies Disko Bay. A narrow water path called the Sullorsuaq Strait separates the island from the Nuussuaq Peninsula. The port of Qeqertarsuaq sits on the southern coast. The Blæsedalen valley is located north of that port.

History shows that this area has seen big changes. Long ago, huge landslides happened in the Sullorsuaq Strait. These landslides created massive waves called megatsunamis. One such wave struck Alluttoq Island around 5650 BC. Another wave hit around 5350 BC. A person named Erik the Red visited the island between 982 and 985. Later, Norse colonists used the island for fishing and hunting. In 1924, a coal mining town called Qullissat was built on the northeast coast.

Qullissat was once a very busy place. By 1952, it was the third-largest settlement in Greenland. It had 995 people living there at that time. By 1966, the town grew to have 1,400 people. However, a large landslide and tsunami hit the area in 1952. This event damaged many buildings in Qullissat. The town was eventually abandoned in 1972. Because of this, no one lives on the northern coast of the island now.

There are many special things to find on Disko Island. You can find many hot springs where warm water comes from the ground. Scientists found a tiny animal there called Limnognathia. This is the only known member of its group. The island also has native iron. Most iron on Earth comes from space, but this iron is found naturally in the ground. One huge lump of this iron weighed 22 tons.
