This island sits in Baffin Bay. It is near Ellesmere Island to the north. Cornwallis Island is to the west. Baffin Island sits to the south. It is the largest uninhabited island in the world. This means no people live there all year. It is the sixth-largest island in Canada. It is also the 27th-largest island on Earth.

The land is a polar desert. It is very dry and gets little rain or snow. The weather is very harsh and cold. In winter, it can drop to -50°C. The summer growing season is very short. It only lasts between 40 and 55 days.

Most of the island is bare. However, some animals like muskox and small birds live there. Most life stays in the Truelove Lowland. This area has a better climate and more plants.

People have visited the island for a long time. Europeans first saw it in 1616. Robert Bylot and William Baffin were the first to see it. Later, William Edward Parry mapped the south coast. He called it North Devon. By the end of the 1800s, the name changed to Devon Island.

In 1924, people built a small outpost at Dundas Harbour. Some Inuit families moved there in 1934. Life was very hard because of the wind and cold. The families left in 1936. The harbour was used again later, but it closed in 1951.

The island has a very special feature. It has the Haughton impact crater. A large meteorite hit the island 39 million years ago. This hit created a huge crater.

The crater was once a lake for millions of years. Scientists found fossils there from long ago. These include a rhinoceros and an ancestor of the seal. The island also has mountain ranges. These are the Treuter, Haddington, and Cunningham Mountains. The highest point is the Devon Ice Cap.

Scientists love to study Devon Island today. The land looks a lot like the planet Mars. This makes it a great place for space research.

NASA uses the island for the Haughton–Mars Project. They study how to live in remote places. This helps them prepare for long trips into space. The island is very isolated and hard to reach. This makes it a perfect match for testing space gear. Scientists study the plants, water, and rocks there. It helps us learn more about other worlds.
