The island sits inside the Arctic Archipelago. It is part of a group called the Queen Elizabeth Islands. One very special spot is Cape Columbia. This is the most northerly point of land in Canada. It is also one of the most northern points on our entire planet.

The land here is very rugged and mountainous. Much of the island is covered by the Arctic Cordillera mountain system. This makes it the most mountainous part of the Arctic Archipelago.

The ground is made of different types of rock. There are high mountains in the north called the Grant Land Highlands. Other parts of the island are large plateaus or flat lands.

Much of the landscape was shaped by huge glaciers. These moving sheets of ice carved the land over a long time. Today, more than one-fifth of the island is a protected national park.

Many different groups of people have lived here throughout history. Long ago, small groups of hunters moved through the area. They often hunted muskoxen in the snowy interior.

Later, the Thule people moved into the High Arctic around 1000 CE. They had great tools like kayaks and sled dogs. They even traded items like iron from far away. These people left behind many clues in the cold, dry ground. The frozen soil, called permafrost, keeps old tools and camps safe for a long time.

European explorers also came to the island to find new paths. William Baffin was the first European to see the island in 1616. Later, many expeditions searched for the lost Franklin expedition.

Some explorers even built forts on the land. The Lady Franklin Bay Expedition built Fort Conger in 1881.

These trips were often very hard because of the thick ice. Many explorers used the knowledge of Inuit guides to help them travel. This helped them learn more about the frozen north.

Today, very few people call Ellesmere Island home. In 2021, only 144 people lived there. They live in just three small settlements. These places are named Alert, Eureka, and Grise Fiord.

The island is part of the Nunavut territory. It is a quiet and remote place. It remains a very important area for scientists to study. They look at the ice, the rocks, and the history left behind by past cultures.
