Disko Island

geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Disko Island is a massive landmass located in Baffin Bay. It sits just off the west coast of Greenland. The island's Greenlandic name translates to "The Large Island." It is a highly significant geographic feature for the region. It ranks as the second largest island in Greenland. Furthermore, it is among the 100 largest islands in the entire world.

The physical geography of the island is quite dramatic. It stretches about 162 kilometers in length. The terrain rises to an average height of 600 meters. The highest point on the island reaches 2,326 meters. To the south, the island meets Disko Bay. A body of water called the Sullorsuaq Strait separates the island from the Nuussuaq Peninsula in the northeast. The port of Qeqertarsuaq is located on the southern coast. North of this port lies the Blæsedalen valley.

Geological processes have shaped the history of this area through powerful events. During the Holocene period, nine large landslides occurred in the Sullorsuaq Strait. These landslides were tsunamigenic, meaning they caused massive waves called tsunamis. Seven of these landslides came from the Nuussuaq Peninsula. Two landslides occurred from the northern coast of Disko Island. Seven of these events happened between 8020 BC and 6520 BC. The two most recent prehistoric landslides created megatsunamis. One struck Alluttoq Island around 5650 BC with a run-up height of 35 meters. Another struck around 5350 BC with a run-up height of 30 meters.

Human history on the island spans many centuries. Erik the Red made the first recorded visit between 982 and 985. Norse colonists later used the island as a base for fishing and summer hunting. In 1924, a coal mining town named Qullissat was founded on the northeast coast. This town became a major center for the region. By 1952, it was the third-largest settlement in Greenland with 995 people. By 1966, the population grew to 1,400 people. However, a major landslide on the Niiortuut mountain caused a tsunami in 1952. This wave struck Qullissat with a run-up height of 11 meters and damaged buildings. The town was eventually abandoned in 1972. Consequently, the northern coast of Disko Island remains uninhabited.

The island is also home to unique geological formations. One of the most interesting features is the presence of native iron. Native iron is metal found in its pure form in nature. Most native iron on Earth comes from meteors from space. However, Disko Island has iron that is not of meteoric origin. Scientists found a massive 22-ton lump of iron and iron carbide. Iron carbide is also known as cohenite. The island also features numerous hot springs where warm water emerges from the ground.

Scientific research has uncovered surprising biodiversity on the island. Studies on meiofauna show high marine interstitial diversity. Meiofauna are tiny animals that live in the spaces between sand grains. For example, a gastrotrich species called Diuronotus aspetos is found here. This specific species has only been reported on Disko Island. It lives alongside many other gastrotrichs like Chaetonotus atrox and Halichaetonotus sp. The island's springs also host unique life forms. In the Isunngua spring, researchers discovered Limnognathia. This microscopic animal is the only known member of its phylum.

Disko Island connects many different scientific fields. Its history involves studying prehistoric landslides and megatsunamis. Its geology offers insights into how native iron forms in the Earth. The presence of unique microscopic animals provides data for biologists. The changing human settlements reflect the impact of natural disasters on communities. From its massive size to its tiny inhabitants, the island is a complex system. It remains a vital area for geological and biological study in Greenland.
