These islands sit in the sea near Normandy, France. They are part of the Channel Islands. The group includes several places like Alderney, Guernsey, Herm, and Sark. There are also many small rocks and reefs nearby. The islands have a total land area of 67 square kilometers. About 67,336 people live in the Bailiwick. Most of these people live on the main island of Guernsey.

Guernsey has its own way of ruling itself. It is a self-governing Crown Dependency. This means it is not part of the United Kingdom. The British monarch is the head of state. A person called the Lieutenant Governor represents the monarch. The UK government handles defense and international rules. However, the islands still have their own separate identity. The States of Guernsey is the parliament for the whole Bailiwick. Local groups like the States of Alderney also make decisions for their own areas.

History connects these islands to very old times. In the year 933, they came under the control of William Longsword. Later, they were part of the lands of William the Conqueror. For a long time, they were part of the Duchy of Normandy. In 1204, a treaty caused a political split. The mainland of Normandy went to France. But these islands stayed loyal to the English Crown. They are the last remaining parts of the old Duchy of Normandy.

Around the year 1290, the islands were split into two parts. A governor named Otto de Grandson made this change. He created two different bailiwicks. One was Jersey and the other was the Bailiwick of Guernsey. This helped manage the different islands. The islands have many different levels of height. The land goes from sea level up to a high point. The highest spot is Le Moulin on the island of Sark. The water around the islands can be very rough. Fast currents make sailing in these waters quite dangerous.

Different islands in the group have their own small governments. Alderney has about 2,200 people and its own parliament. Sark is much smaller with only about 600 people. Sark's parliament is called the Chief Pleas. In 1565, Queen Elizabeth I gave Sark to Helier de Carteret. He had to keep the island free from pirates. The islands also have twelve different parishes. Each parish has a church that is very old. Some of these churches date all the way back to the 11th century.
