Brittany is a peninsula and cultural region in northwest France.

Historically, Brittany has functioned as a distinct political entity. It was once an independent kingdom and later a duchy. In 1532, it was united with the Kingdom of France. It remained a province governed as a separate nation under the crown. The region is the traditional homeland of the Breton people. They are one of the six Celtic nations. This heritage provides a unique cultural identity. Some people refer to the area as "Little Britain." This name shares an etymology with Great Britain. The word "Brittany" derives from the Latin "Britannia." This term originally meant "land of the Britons."
Human history in Brittany began during the Lower Palaeolithic period. Early inhabitants included Neanderthals with a distinct "Colombanian" culture. Homo sapiens arrived approximately 35,000 years ago. They eventually replaced or absorbed the Neanderthal populations. After the last glacial period, the climate became warmer. This allowed the land to become heavily wooded. Large communities transitioned from hunting and gathering to settled farming. This shift occurred through the Neolithic Revolution. This was driven by slow immigration and the exchange of skills.
Neolithic Brittany is famous for its massive megalithic structures. Megaliths are large stones used in ancient monuments. The region is considered a "core area" for this culture. Early builders created cairns, which are stone mounds. They also built princely tombs and long stone rows. Some of these structures date to the early 5th millennium BC. Notable examples include the Cairn of Barnenez and the Tumulus Saint-Michel. In the Morbihan department, the Carnac stones are located.
During the Gallic era, five Celtic tribes inhabited the region. The Curiosolitae lived near modern-day Corseul. The Namnetes lived in the Loire-Atlantique area and named the city of Nantes. The Osismii occupied the western parts of the peninsula. The Redones lived in the east and gave their name to Rennes. The Veneti lived in the Morbihan area and named the city of Vannes. The Veneti maintained strong economic ties with Insular Celts for the tin trade.
In the late 4th century, significant migrations occurred. Britons from the Domnonée region of Great Britain moved to Armorica. This migration is why the Breton language relates closely to Cornish. This period saw the rise of leaders like Riothamus. He was called the "King of the Britons" by the historian Jordanes. By the 6th century, the name "Britannia" replaced "Armorica." The modern administrative layout is different from the historic province. The historic area is now split among five departments. These are Finistère, Côtes-d'Armor, Ille-et-Vilaine, Morbihan, and Loire-Atlantique.
Today, Brittany has a population of about 4,475,295 people.
