Many big changes happened through the centuries. The French Revolution of 1789 changed the government. It produced the Declaration of the Rights of Man.

The history of this land began with very early humans. Archaic humans left traces here about 1.8 million years ago. Neanderthals lived in the region until they were replaced by Homo sapiens around 35,000 BC. During this time, people created cave paintings in the Dordogne and Pyrenees. One famous site is Lascaux, which dates to about 18,000 BC. Later, the Neolithic era brought sedentary life and agriculture. People began working with metals like gold, copper, bronze, and iron. Huge stone structures, called megaliths, like the Carnac stones, were built around 3,300 BC.

Ancient times brought new cultures and conflicts to the region. Ionian Greeks founded the colony of Massalia around 600 BC. Later, Celtic tribes known as Gauls spread across the country. The Romans eventually conquered the area. Julius Caesar defeated the Gallic chieftain Vercingetorix in 52 BC. This created a distinct Gallo-Roman culture. Many cities, such as Lugdunum, were founded during this period. Eventually, Germanic tribes like the Franks moved into the north. These groups changed the political landscape of the region forever.

The Middle Ages saw the rise of the Franks. The name France comes from the Latin word Francia. This means the "realm of the Franks." The name is related to the word "frank," which means free. This might be because the Franks were exempt from certain taxes. Clovis I was the first leader to unite the Franks. He made Paris his capital and started the Merovingian dynasty. Later, the Carolingian dynasty rose to power. Charlemagne built a massive empire across Western and Central Europe. After his death, the empire was split in 843. West Francia became the precursor to the modern nation of France.

France went through many different forms of government. The French Revolution of 1789 was a massive turning point. It overthrew the old system and created the Declaration of the Rights of Man.

This document still expresses national ideals today. In the early 19th century, Napoleon Bonaparte established the First French Empire. He brought France to its political and military peak. After his era, the country saw the Bourbon Restoration and the Second Empire. The Second Empire fell during the Franco-Prussian War in 1870. This led to the Third Republic and the prosperous Belle Époque era.

The 20th century brought great challenges and changes. France was a major participant in World War I. It emerged victorious but at a high human and economic cost. During World War II, Germany occupied France in 1940. The country was eventually liberated in 1944. After the war, the Fourth Republic was formed. It was later replaced by the current Fifth Republic in 1958. This semi-presidential system was created by Charles de Gaulle. Around this time, most French colonies, such as Algeria, gained independence. However, many kept close economic and military ties with France.

Today, France is a global leader in many important fields. It is a center for art, science, and philosophy. The country has 54 UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
