French settlers arrived much later. They founded the city of Cayenne in 1643. For a long time, the area was used as a place for prisoners. There were prisons on the mainland and on three islands called the Salvation Islands. One of these was known as Devil's Island.

Today, about 298,554 people live in French Guiana.

The physical landscape is defined by extreme natural features. Approximately 98.9% of the territory is covered by forests, much of which is primeval rainforest. The land rises from a coastal strip to the modest peaks of the Tumuc-Humac mountains along the Brazilian border. The highest peak is Bellevue de l'Inini, located in Maripasoula.

Because it is located within six degrees of the equator, the region has an equatorial climate. This means the weather is generally hot and wet. The terrain includes many rivers, such as the Waki River, and the Petit-Saut Dam, which provides hydroelectricity. Small islands also sit off the coast, including the three Salvation Islands. One of these islands was famously part of a penal system known as Devil's Island. This system operated from 1852 to 1953 and included prisons on both the islands and the mainland.

The history of the region involves many different groups of people. Originally, indigenous groups like the Kalina, Lokono, and Galibi inhabited the land. The name "Guyana" is an indigenous term meaning "land of many waters."

French colonists founded Cayenne in 1643. For a long time, the region functioned as a slave society with large sugar plantations. Slavery was officially abolished in French Guiana in February 1794 following the French Revolution. Later, the territory served as a penal colony where convicts sometimes caught butterflies to sell to international collectors.

Political structures in French Guiana have changed significantly over time. In 1946, the region transitioned from a colony to a French department. Since December 2015, it has been ruled by a single territorial collectivity. The French Guiana Assembly manages both regional and departmental government.

The current president of this assembly is Gabriel Serville. While standard French is the official language, French Guianese Creole is the most widely spoken language among the ethnic communities.

Today, the economy is heavily influenced by high-tech science. A large part of the economy depends on the Guiana Space Centre near Kourou.

This center is the primary launch site for the European Space Agency. It has been used to launch famous spacecraft, including the James Webb Space Telescope. In 2025, the successful launch of the Ariane 6 rocket provided Europe with independent access to space. This facility makes the region a vital hub for the global space industry.

Despite its successes, the region faces several modern challenges. There is a chronic issue with illegal and ecologically destructive gold mining in the remote rainforest. The territory also deals with high costs of living and social unrest. In 2017, workers held a large demonstration to demand more resources and better infrastructure. Additionally, the region manages the movement of various migrants, including refugees from Laos and Suriname. These factors show that French Guiana is a complex place where high-tech space exploration meets the challenges of a tropical frontier.
