It sits near the southern coast of Ireland. Many different lands surround this sea. These include parts of Wales and Cornwall. It also sits near Devon and Brittany. The sea is bounded by several channels. These are the Saint George's Channel and the English Channel. The Bristol Channel and the Bay of Biscay also form its limits.

The way the sea works involves its unique shape and floor. The bottom of the sea is called the Celtic Shelf. This is part of the larger continental shelf of Europe. In the northeast, the depth is between 100 and 200 meters. The floor has sand ridges that point toward the southwest. These ridges were made by tides when the sea level was lower. Between these ridges are deep areas called troughs.

People did not always call this area the Celtic Sea. In 1921, a man named E. W. L. Holt proposed the name. He suggested it at a meeting of experts in Dublin. Before this, the area had many different names. Some called it the Southwest Approaches to Great Britain. Experts wanted one name for the whole area. This was because the biology and the water were so similar.

Many living things call this sea home. In 2007, the total catch of fish was 1.8 million tonnes. You can often find four types of sea mammals here. These are the minke whale and the bottlenose dolphin. You might also see the short-beaked common dolphin. The harbor porpoise is also a frequent visitor.

Humans also use the sea for energy and resources. The Kinsale Head gas field supplied much of Ireland's gas. This happened during the 1980s and the 1990s. The water is too deep for fixed wind turbines. However, there is potential for 50 GW of floating wind farms. A company called TotalEnergies plans a project for 100 MW.
