It connects to the North Atlantic Ocean at both ends. One end is through the North Channel. The other end is through the St George's Channel.

This sea has many different shapes and depths. The western side has a deep channel. This channel can be between 60 and 100 meters deep. The eastern side has shallower bays.

Some areas, like Cardigan Bay, are not very deep. There are also many large sandbanks under the water. These include the Kish Bank and the Arklow Bank. The sea is widest at 240 kilometers. It narrows to only 80 kilometers in other spots.

The sea has changed a lot over a long time. It was formed during the Neogene era. Long ago, the Romans called it Mare Hibernicus. About 20,000 years ago, the world was very cold. During that time, the middle of the sea was a freshwater lake. When the ice melted 10,000 years ago, the lake joined the sea.

Many people have crossed these waters for history. The Normans used ships to invade Ireland in the 12th century. Later, the Tudors crossed in the 1500s.

Today, the sea is very important for trade and travel. There are no bridges or tunnels between the islands. This means most heavy goods must move by ship. Over 12 million passengers and goods cross every year.

Many people use the sea for power too. Wind turbines and nuclear plants help make energy here. Large ships like the Ulysses carry cars and people. The Port of Liverpool is a very busy place for cargo.

Many large cities sit near the coast. Dublin is a major city in the Republic of Ireland. Liverpool is a large city in England. Belfast is a big city in Northern Ireland.
