It sits within the Irish Sea and borders the mainland at the Menai Strait. The island is divided into different types of land. The northern and eastern coasts are very rugged and rocky. In contrast, the southern and western coasts are much gentler. The middle of the island consists of gently rolling land. The island of Anglesey is the largest in Wales. It is also the seventh largest island in all of Britain.

Life on the island is shaped by its natural surroundings. Many people work in farming, energy, or tourism. The coast is a very popular place for visitors to explore.

Holyhead is the largest town and serves as a major ferry port. Boats use this port to travel to Dublin, Ireland. The island is also a special place for the Welsh language. About 57.2% of the people there speak Welsh. This makes the island a true heartland for the language.

People have lived on Anglesey for thousands of years. The land became hospitable about 12,000 years ago after the last ice age. Early settlers built villages and burial mounds like Bryn Celli Ddu.

During the Iron Age, people lived in roundhouses. Some of these ancient hut circles can still be seen today. In the Roman period, people mined copper on the island. The Romans even built a road that leads from Holyhead to Llanfairpwllgwyngyll.

History on the island is full of strong leaders and kingdoms. The House of Aberffraw ruled the Kingdom of Gwynedd from Anglesey. They held their royal courts at places like Aberffraw and Rhosyr. Later, the island saw many different groups arrive. Vikings raided the area, and their influence may be in the island's name. In the 13th century, King Edward I conquered Wales. He built Beaumaris Castle to help control the area.

Modern Anglesey is a place of great natural beauty. Much of the coastline is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Since 2015, the whole county has been a UNESCO Global Geopark. This is because the rocks and geology are very unique.

People travel across the island using roads like the A55 expressway. Large reservoirs like Llyn Alaw provide drinking water to the north. Small islands nearby are home to many seabird colonies. This makes the island a wonderful place to discover the natural world.
