The Denmark Strait is a very long sea path.

It sits between the land of Greenland and the island of Iceland. This strait acts like a bridge between two big oceans. It connects the Greenland Sea to the Irminger Sea. The Greenland Sea is part of the Arctic Ocean. The Irminger Sea is part of the Atlantic Ocean. This area is a very important place for the Earth's waters.

Water moves through this strait in a special way. A cold stream called the East Greenland Current flows through it. This current moves southeast along the coast of Greenland. It carries big chunks of ice called icebergs into the North Atlantic. The bottom of the sea has a feature called the Greenland–Iceland Rise. This rise makes the sea floor narrow in some spots. There is also a huge underwater waterfall here. It is called the Denmark Strait cataract. It is the largest known waterfall under the sea. It flows down the western side of the strait.

History happened in these waters during a hard time called World War II. On 24 May 1941, a fight took place here. People call this the Battle of the Denmark Strait. A German ship named the Bismarck wanted to reach the North Atlantic. It wanted to find and raid Allied convoys. The Bismarck was a very large and strong ship. This battle changed the path of the ship forever. It was a very intense moment in the history of the sea.

Many details tell us about this place. The narrowest part is between Straumnes and the Blosseville Coast. Straumnes is on the Hornstrandir peninsula in Iceland. The dividing line of the oceans runs from Straumnes to Cape Nansen. This cape is southwest of Cape Tupinier. During the battle, the British ship HMS Hood was hit. It exploded, and only three people from the 1,418 crew survived. The Bismarck was also damaged during the fight. It sank only three days after the battle.

Today, we can see why this place matters to the world. The strait hosts many important fisheries where people catch fish. It also shows us how the oceans connect. The map shows where the strait sits between the lands. The photo shows the pack ice that moves through the water. This area helps us understand how cold water and ice move. It is a key link between the Arctic and the Atlantic.
