It sits between mid-western Greenland and Baffin Island in Canada. To the north, the water meets Baffin Bay. To the south, it sits near the Labrador Sea. This area is actually the widest strait in the whole world.

It is a very important place for ocean travel.

Under the water, the ground is not flat. The seafloor has ridges and basins called grabens. These shapes formed about 45 to 62 million years ago. This happened during the Paleogene times. Large faults in the earth moved the ground. These movements helped connect the Labrador Sea to Baffin Bay. The water here is shallower than the deep Labrador Sea.

An English explorer named John Davis sailed here long ago. He lived from 1550 to 1605. He was looking for the Northwest Passage. That is a way to sail through the icy north. Later on, people used the strait for other things. By the 1650s, many ships came to hunt whales. The strong tides made this a hard job for them. These tides can be very fierce and powerful.

Scientists study the area for its natural resources. The United States Geological Survey looks at the Arctic. They think much of the world's oil and gas is there. They estimate 13% of undiscovered oil is in the Arctic. They also think 30% of undiscovered gas is there. The seas near Greenland may hold large amounts of gas. This has led to many plans to find these fuels.

Many different groups of people care about this water. Greenland's leaders offer areas to companies for work. They look for oil and gas in the Davis Strait. They also look in Baffin Bay and the Greenland Sea. People also study the life in these cold waters. They look at things like the Greenland Halibut. This place connects the land of Greenland to the land of Canada.
