The Davis Strait is a major southern arm of the Arctic Ocean.

It acts as a massive waterway connecting different parts of the north. The strait sits between mid-western Greenland and Baffin Island in Nunavut, Canada. To its north lies Baffin Bay. To its south, it sits near the Labrador Sea. This body of water is notable for its size. In fact, it is the broadest strait in the entire world.

Under the surface, the seafloor has a very complex structure. It is made of ridges and buried basins called grabens. These features formed during the Paleogene period. This happened approximately 45 million to 62 million years ago. The shapes were created by strike-slip faulting in the Ungava Fault Zone. This type of faulting occurs when rocks slide past each other horizontally. This movement transferred plate-tectonic motions from the Labrador Sea to Baffin Bay.

The depth of the water varies throughout the area. The Davis Strait is substantially shallower than the Labrador Sea to its south. Navigators must also account for the movement of the water itself. The strait is famous for its fierce tides. These powerful currents can be quite difficult to manage. In the past, these tides discouraged many early explorers. They also created significant challenges for whaling ships during the age of sail.

The history of the strait is tied to famous explorers and industries. It was named after the English explorer John Davis. He lived from 1550 to 1605. Davis sailed through these waters while searching for the Northwest Passage. This was a sought-after sea route through the Arctic. Later, the region became a center for maritime activity. By the 1650s, the strait was actively used for whale hunting.

Today, scientists and governments focus on the natural resources found there. The United States Geological Survey has studied the Arctic extensively. They estimate that 13% of the world's undiscovered oil deposits are located in the Arctic. Furthermore, they estimate that 30% of the world's undiscovered gas pockets are there. The waters surrounding Greenland may hold large amounts of natural gas. They may also hold lesser amounts of crude oil and natural gas liquids.

Because of these resources, there is much economic interest in the region. Greenland's minister and provincial council have taken specific actions. They have offered a large number of off-shore concessions for hydrocarbon extraction. Hydrocarbons are substances like oil and gas used for fuel. The largest of these concession areas are located in the seas west of Greenland. These are primarily situated in the Davis Strait and Baffin Bay. Some smaller concessions also exist in the Greenland Sea to the east.

The Davis Strait serves as a vital link in many global systems. It connects the landmasses of Greenland and Canada. It also serves as a gateway between the Labrador Sea and Baffin Bay. The geological history of the fault zones links the movement of the entire region. Even the biological life is tied to these waters. Researchers study species like the Greenland Halibut within these cold environments. The strait remains a place of great scientific and economic importance.
