Cape Chidley

geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Cape Chidley is a significant headland located in Canada. It sits on the eastern shore of Killiniq Island. This island is part of the Labrador Peninsula. The cape marks the northernmost point of the province of Labrador. It also serves as a boundary between two regions. This boundary separates Newfoundland and Labrador from the territory of Nunavut.

This location is a critical point for the movement of water. Cape Chidley acts as the terminus of the Laurentian Divide. A divide is a line that separates different watersheds. A watershed is an area of land where all water drains to one place. At this cape, the divide separates the Atlantic Ocean watershed from the Arctic Ocean watershed. The northern and western parts of Killiniq Island drain into Ungava Bay and the Hudson Strait. These areas belong to the Arctic Ocean watershed. The rest of the Labrador Peninsula drains into the Atlantic.

The geography around the cape is defined by dramatic landforms. The Torngat Mountains run along the coast of Labrador. These mountains continue until they reach Killiniq Island. The cape itself is a high knoll. The top of this landform is considerably higher than the headlands on either side. To the north of the cape, you will find the Cape Chidley Islands. The island of Killiniq is not attached to the mainland. A narrow water passage called the McLelan Strait separates the island from North America.

Human history at the cape began with exploration. An English explorer named John Davis arrived at this location in 1587. He named the headland after his friend, John Chidley. This was a time when the Dominion of Newfoundland was a separate country. This history shaped how the borders on Killiniq Island were eventually set. The cape marks the south end of the entrance to the Hudson Strait. This water path sits directly opposite Resolution Island.

In the 20th century, the area became important for science and defense. On October 22, 1943, workers landed just south of the cape. They established Weather Station Kurt to collect important weather data. Later, the area was considered for the Pinetree Line. The Pinetree Line was a series of radar stations. These stations were placed along the 50th parallel north. The government originally planned a long-range radar station called "N-30" at Cape Chidley.

Plans for the N-30 station involved significant movement of supplies. Ships carried materials to the site during 1951 and 1952. However, the plans for the station changed. Between late 1952 and early 1953, the site was moved to Resolution Island. This shows how military and scientific locations can shift over time. The area also saw human settlement nearby. The community of Port Burwell in Nunavut was once the closest community to the cape. However, Port Burwell was evacuated in 1978.

Cape Chidley remains a vital landmark for understanding Canadian geography. It connects the mountains, the islands, and the sea. It marks where the Atlantic and Arctic worlds meet. The cape shows how a single point can define a border and a watershed. It is a place where the landscape dictates how water flows and how people move. From its discovery in 1587 to its use in modern weather science, the cape has always been a place of interest.
