It sits near the coast of Ireland. Many lands surround this sea. These include parts of Wales, England, and France. The sea gets its name from the Celtic people. They lived on the lands nearby.

Experts wanted one common name for this area. They chose it because the water and rocks are similar. The bottom of the sea is called the Celtic Shelf. It is part of a big shelf under the ocean. In some spots, sand ridges sit on the bottom. These ridges formed when the sea level was lower.

Many animals live in these waters. You might see a minke whale. You might also see dolphins or a harbor porpoise. In 2007, people caught 1.8 million tonnes of fish here.

People also look for power in the sea. The water is too deep for fixed wind fans. But, big wind farms can float on the water. These use wind to make power. Some companies also look for oil and gas. The Kinsale Head gas field once gave much gas to Ireland.
