The Bay of Biscay is a large part of the northeast Atlantic Ocean.

It sits between the western coast of France and the northern coast of Spain. In France, people often call it the Gulf of Gascony. In Spain, it is known as the Gulf of Biscay. The southernmost part of this water is called the Cantabrian Sea. The name "Biscay" likely comes from the Basque districts in northern Spain. This area is a very important part of the ocean landscape in Europe.

Nature works in many ways to shape this bay. Parts of the continental shelf reach far into the water. This makes many areas fairly shallow. Shallow water can lead to very rough seas. Heavy storms often hit the bay during the winter months.

You might also see a large triangle of fog in the late spring. Powerful windstorms called galernas can also travel very fast through the area.

Many different rivers empty into these waters. Some of these rivers include the Loire, the Garonne, and the Adour. These rivers carry water from the land into the sea. Many large cities are built near the coast of the bay. You can find cities like Bordeaux, Bilbao, and Santander there. Lorient and Nantes are other important cities found along the shores. These places connect the land to the sea.

History shows that this bay has seen many big events. Romans knew this place a long time ago in the 1st century BC. They called it the Sinus Cantabrorum. Over the centuries, many naval battles happened here. In 1592, the Spanish defeated an English fleet in the bay. During World War II, U-boat crews called the area the "Valley of Death." This was because of many losses caused by air attacks.

Many living things call the Bay of Biscay home. You can see whales and dolphins from large ferry ships. Some people even use binoculars to watch them. The beaked whale is often seen in these waters.
