To the east lies the Basque Country. To the west is Asturias. To the south, it meets Castile and León. People often call this area part of "Green Spain." This name describes the lush, green plants that grow there.

The wet and temperate climate makes the land very green.

The land has two very different shapes. The first part is the coast. It has wide, rolling valleys and low hills.

Some parts of the coast have steep cliffs and sandy beaches. The Santander Bay is a very large part of this coastline. The second part is the mountains. These are the Cantabrian Mountains.

Most of these mountains are made of limestone rock. They create deep valleys that run from the mountains to the sea. Some of the highest peaks are in the Picos de Europa. These summits can reach over 2,600 meters in height.

The weather in Cantabria is shaped by the ocean. The Atlantic Ocean brings winds that hit the mountains. This creates a humid climate with mild winters and warm summers.

It rains quite often here. The mountains catch the rain, so the high areas get even more water. In the highest parts of the Picos de Europa, it is very cold. Snow stays on the ground there all year long. Sometimes, a special wind called a "surada" blows down from the mountains. This wind can feel dry and warm near the coast.

Water moves quickly through this land. The rivers in Cantabria are usually short and fast.

They flow down steep slopes because the mountains are so close to the sea. These rivers have a lot of power to wear away the rock. Because it rains so much, the rivers flow all year. Cantabria is very special because its rivers flow into three different seas. They flow into the Cantabrian Sea, the Atlantic Ocean, and the Mediterranean Sea. This is a unique thing for a region in this part of the world.

People have lived in Cantabria for a very long time. Some of the oldest signs of humans are from the Lower Paleolithic period.

The most famous spot is the Altamira cave. It has incredible cave paintings from about 37,000 BCE. UNESCO named this cave and nine others as World Heritage Sites. The modern province was officially formed on July 28, 1778. People celebrate this date every year as the Day of the Institutions. The name Cantabria might even come from old Celtic words for "rocky" or "highlands."
