A wide water area called an estuary flows through the city. Two small mountain ranges surround the main urban area. This makes the city feel tucked into the landscape.

The weather in Bilbao is shaped by the nearby sea. Low-pressure systems from the Bay of Biscay bring much rain. Because of this, the city sees high rainfall throughout the year. However, the air stays mild most of the time. The summer temperatures are not too hot compared to other parts of Spain. The amount of sunshine is often quite low. This creates a very specific feeling for anyone visiting the area.

Bilbao has a very long and interesting history. People lived on nearby Mount Malmasín in ancient times. Some burial sites on Mount Avril are 6,000 years old. The city was officially founded in the late 13th century. A man named Diego López V de Haro started it.
