The monument is a large mound made of earth and stone. It weighs about 200,000 tonnes. Inside the mound, there is a long stone passageway. This path is 19 metres long and leads to a central chamber. The chamber has a special opening called a "roofbox" above the entrance. On the winter solstice, the rising sun shines through this box. The light floods the dark inner chamber with brightness.

People built Newgrange a very long time ago. It was made around 3100 BC during the Neolithic Period. This means it is older than the Egyptian pyramids. It is also older than Stonehenge. The people who built it were farmers. They grew crops and raised animals like cattle. Some experts believe it took at least thirty years to build. They used many different stones to create the structure.

Builders moved many stones from far away to this site. White quartz stones for the front came from the Wicklow Mountains. Dark stones came from the Mourne Mountains. Some stones might have traveled by boat up the River Boyne. Many stones have beautiful art carved into them. These carvings include spirals, circles, and lines. One famous stone at the entrance is five tonnes in weight.

Archaeologists have studied the mound to learn about the past. They found human bones inside the passage. They also found small items like beads, pendants, and bone pins. These were likely gifts left for the dead. In old Irish stories, people believed gods lived in these mounds. One god was named Aengus. Today, Newgrange is a famous national monument for Ireland.
