The word comes from an old word meaning a mound or a burial monument. These structures can be built above the ground or deep below it. They are some of the oldest monuments in human history. People use them to honor the dead in many different ways. Tombs can show what a person believed about life. They also show a person's social status or power.

Many different types of tombs exist around the world.

Some very old tombs were simple mounds of earth and stones. These are called tumuli, or burial mounds. Other people built megalithic tombs using huge stones. These were often covered with earth to make them look like hills. In some places, people carved tombs directly into solid rock. These are known as rock-cut tombs. You can see these in the city of Petra in Jordan.

Some cultures even used ships for burials. The Vikings were known for placing the dead in a ship.

History shows us that many famous leaders had grand tombs. A mausoleum is a large, free-standing building used as a tomb. The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus was so famous it became a Wonder of the Ancient World. In ancient Egypt, people built huge pyramids for their leaders. The Great Pyramid of Giza is the largest pyramid by volume. Another famous example is the Taj Mahal in Agra, India. This beautiful mausoleum was built for Mumtaz Mahal.

In many churches, you might find a crypt. A crypt is an underground room beneath a building. It is often used for bishops or saints. Some tombs are even decorated with beautiful art. For example, stećak are decorated medieval tombstones found in Bosnia and Herzegovina. These details help us learn about how people lived long ago.

Tombs connect us to the history of human art and belief. They show us how people expressed their values through sculpture and painting. Some tombs are places where people go on a pilgrimage. This means people travel to visit a sacred site. Other tombs, like the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, honor many people at once. You can find these in places like Paris or Arlington National Cemetery. Whether they are small or huge, tombs tell a story about the people who made them.
