A morgue is a special place for people who have died.

It is used to store human corpses for a short time. This waiting period allows for identification or an autopsy. An autopsy is a medical exam to learn why someone died. People also use these spaces before a respectful burial or cremation. In North America, people usually call this a morgue. In the United Kingdom, the term mortuary is more common.

Most morgues work by using cold rooms to slow down decomposition. Decomposition is the way a body begins to break down. There are two main ways these cold chambers work. The first type stays just above freezing. These rooms keep bodies between 2 °C and 4 °C. This can keep a body for several weeks. The second type is much colder, from −10 °C to −50 °C.

These freezing temperatures are often used at forensic institutes. This helps when a body has not yet been identified.

The history of these words shows how our ideas have changed. The word mortuary comes from the 14th century. It originally meant a gift given to a priest. The word morgue comes from the French language. In 15th-century Paris, it described a place to identify unknown corpses. Long ago, people used a different term called a deadhouse. In 1865, the word mortuary became a more polite way to speak.

This helped people talk about death more gently.

Different places have different rules for how they handle death. In some countries, families must hold a burial within 72 hours. In other places, a burial might take many weeks or months. Because of this, some bodies stay in cold chambers for up to two years. Some funeral homes even have special ovens called retorts for cremation. These ovens can have a viewing window for families to watch. This allows them to follow their religious customs.

Sometimes, a city might need a temporary morgue. This happens if many people die during a single event. In these hard times, regular morgue spaces might become too full. Modern cities try to find extra space to help. They might use large public buildings like an ice rink. They might also use refrigerator trucks because they are easy to move.
