An autopsy is a medical procedure used to study a body after death.

Doctors perform this work to find out why someone died. They look for the cause, the mode, and the manner of death. This helps people understand if a death was natural or unnatural. Sometimes, doctors use these exams to study diseases or injuries. This research can help keep other living people safe from harm.

There are several ways this work happens. A forensic autopsy is used for legal reasons. These help solve crimes by looking for clues like wounds or poison. A clinical autopsy is done to learn about medical conditions. These help doctors see if hospital care was correct. Some students perform academic autopsies to learn about how the body is built.

There is also a virtual autopsy. This uses machines like an MRI or CT scan. It lets doctors see inside the body without cutting it.

The word autopsy comes from Ancient Greek. It means "to see for oneself." The term post-mortem comes from Latin. It means "after death." People have used the word autopsy since around the 17th century. The term necropsy is also used for animals. This word comes from Greek words meaning "dead sight."

Many important facts come from these studies. In one study, autopsies found 171 missed diagnoses. These included 21 cases of cancer and 12 strokes. Autopsies can also reveal unexpected findings in about half of all cases. In the United Kingdom, only 0.7% of adult deaths in 2013 had a consented autopsy. In Sweden and Finland, the rate is much higher at 20% to 30%.

These studies connect what we see to how the body works. They have helped us discover many things. For example, they helped find diseases like Legionnaire's disease. They also helped us understand fetal alcohol syndrome. By studying these things, doctors learn how to prevent sickness. This turns a sad event into a way to help the living.
