Dissection is the way scientists study how living things are built.

By carefully cutting into a dead plant or animal, they can see the internal structure. This helps them understand how different parts work together. In schools, students often use small animals or plants for these lessons. Medical students take it much further by studying human cadavers. A cadaver is a body used for teaching anatomy, which is the study of body parts.

There are many ways to perform a dissection. One way is the Virchow technique, where a person removes individual organs one by one. Another way is the Letulle technique, which involves removing the entire organ body at once. This can be faster so a body can be sent to a funeral director sooner. There is also the Rokitansky method, which studies the organ block while it is still in place. Some people use the Ghon technique to look at three separate blocks of organs. These different methods help scientists see everything from the heart to the stomach.

People have used dissection to explore the body for many centuries. In ancient Greece, physicians like Herophilus and Erasistratus studied human anatomy in the third century BC. Because Roman law once forbade human dissection, some doctors had to study animals instead. For example, Galen dissected a Barbary macaque, which is a type of primate. He believed animal anatomy was mostly the same as human anatomy.

He also learned by watching wounded gladiators.

In India, dissection helped create a deep understanding of the body. Early hunters learned anatomy by preparing prey they had caught. Later, students practiced their slicing skills by using gourds and squash. This helped them master the techniques needed for medical work. In the 1800s, students like Pandit Madhusudan Gupta helped bring university-level dissection back to India.

Today, many students use a mix of real dissection and computer models. This helps them learn difficult subjects more easily.

Dissection is also a very important tool for doctors and judges. When a person dies, a doctor might perform an autopsy to find the cause of death. In animals, this same process is called a necropsy.

In the field of surgery, doctors use dissection to carefully separate an organ from the tissue around it. This helps them perform operations without causing extra damage. While some people now use virtual dissection on computers, real dissection remains a major part of medical training.
