A funeral is a ceremony held to honor someone who has died.

These events focus on the final disposition of a body. This means deciding how to handle the remains through burial, entombment, or cremation. People use these ceremonies to remember and respect the dead. Many families gather to mourn their loss or celebrate a life. They might offer sympathy to those who are grieving.

Some ceremonies include a memorial service. This is a way to remember someone without their body being present. In both types of services, friends often give eulogies. These are speeches that honor the person's life. People might also display photos of the person at different stages of their life.

There are many ways to handle a body based on belief. Some cultures choose to preserve the body, like through mummification. Others choose to destroy the body through processes like cremation.

In Tibet, some Buddhists perform a sky burial. In this ritual, the body is placed on a mountain to be eaten by vultures. This is seen as a way to help the soul move to the next life. In the Baháʼí Faith, the body is wrapped in a shroud of silk or cotton. It is then placed in a coffin made of stone, crystal, or fine wood. The body is positioned with the feet facing the Qiblih.

Zoroastrians used Towers of Silence for their own rituals. These were open structures where birds could feed on the deceased.

Funeral customs are a very stable force in human communities.

These rituals have existed for a very long time. Archaeologists have found evidence of burials dating back 300,000 years. In places like the Shanidar Cave in Iraq, they found Neanderthal skeletons. These skeletons were found with a layer of flower pollen. This suggests that even very early humans showed reverence for the dead. Some experts think this shows they had religious beliefs. Others think small animals might have moved the flowers there. Regardless, the act of deliberate burial is a very old human tradition.

Different religions have specific rules for these ceremonies.

In Hinduism, the ritual is called Antyesti, which means "last rites." Adults are usually cremated, often near a river or water. The body is washed and wrapped in cloth before the ceremony. After cremation, the ash is often given to a sea or river. For 10 to 12 days, families observe a period of mourning. During this time, some families may even sleep on the floor.

Many services happen in a church, a synagogue, or a funeral home. Some ceremonies are held at a cemetery chapel. These chapels provide a quiet and respectful space for families. If a person is cremated, the service might be at a crematorium.

Funerals are also connected to art, which is called funerary art. This includes making beautiful tombs or special objects like flowers. These traditions help people connect to their history and their community. They provide a way to transition through the hard time of loss. Even though every culture is different, the goal is often the same.
