A columbarium is a special place for remembering people. It is a building used to hold funerary urns. These urns contain the cremated remains of the dead. People use these structures to honor those they have lost. Most columbaria are places for public or respectful storage. They help families keep a connection to their loved ones.

These structures work in many different ways today. Some are small units found in a cemetery. Others are part of a larger mausoleum or building. Some are even built into the walls of a church. Manufacturers can even build them offsite. Then, a large truck brings the unit to a cemetery. This makes it easier to set up these memorial spaces.

The word comes from the Latin word columba. This word means dove. Long ago, these buildings were used as dovecotes. That means they were for housing pigeons and doves. In ancient Rome, many columbaria were built underground. Some were very beautiful and full of art. They had colorful paintings called frescoes on the walls. They also had pretty patterns called mosaics made of small stones.

History shows many famous Roman examples. There was the Columbarium of Pomponius Hylas. Other names include the Columbarium of Livia and the Columbarium of Marcella. There were many others, like the Columbarium of Statilii. Today, we see columbaria in many famous places. The Père Lachaise Cemetery is in Paris, France. Golders Green Crematorium is in London, England. The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels is in Los Angeles.

Columbaria connect to many different beliefs and traditions. In Buddhism, they can look like pagodas. These are special pavilions at Buddhist temples. This allows survivors to visit a temple for ancestor rites. In the Catholic Church, cremation is permitted. This means urns can be placed in Catholic cemeteries. In the Czechoslovak Hussite Church, building them in churches is very common. One example is the Church of St Nicolas in Prague.
