It is a designated land used for burial or entombment. Some people call these spaces graveyards, but that name usually means the land is part of a churchyard.

There are many ways to hold remains in a cemetery. A person might be buried in a grave in the ground. Others might be placed in a tomb, which is a grave above the ground. Some use a columbarium, which is a building with small spaces for ashes.

These places are important for many different cultures and religions.

How a cemetery works often depends on the local rules and beliefs. In many Western cultures, people hold funeral ceremonies at these sites.

In the past, some people were buried in mass graves until their bodies decomposed. After that, the bones were often moved to an ossuary, which is a place to store bones. This helped make more room for new people. In crowded cities, cemeteries sometimes even add new soil on top to create more space.

Some modern sites also include a crematorium, where bodies are turned into ashes.

History shows that humans have used cemeteries for a very long time.

The Taforalt cave in Morocco might be the oldest known cemetery. It held the remains of at least 34 people from about 14,000 to 15,100 years ago. During the Neolithic period, people used "grave fields" to bury their dead. These sites help scientists learn about ancient cultures. In the Middle Ages, people in Europe sometimes reopened graves. They did this to move artifacts or remains between the 5th and 8th centuries CE. This happened in places like Germany, France, and England.

As cities grew, the way we use cemeteries changed a lot.

In the 1800s, many churchyards became too crowded and unhealthy. This was a big problem during the Industrial Revolution. In 1831, a cholera epidemic killed 52,000 people in Britain. This made people realize that old graveyards near water were dangerous. To fix this, new large cemeteries were built far away from city centers. In London, the "Magnificent Seven" cemeteries were started in the 1830s. One of these was Kensal Green, which opened in 1832.

Today, cemeteries can look very different from one another.

Some are urban cemeteries located right inside a busy city. These can be quite crowded and sometimes have many burials in one grave. Others are designed to look like beautiful parks or gardens. In the United States, early rural cemeteries were even used for picnics and races.

Many old urban cemeteries are now quiet places for nature. They provide homes for birds and plants that cannot live anywhere else in the city. These green spaces help keep a little bit of nature alive in our towns.
