A cemetery is a designated area for the burial or entombment of human remains.

The term comes from the Greek word "koimeterion," which implies land set aside specifically for the dead. While people often use the word "graveyard" interchangeably, that term usually refers to a burial ground located within a churchyard.

Beyond simple graves, remains may be placed in various structures. These include tombs, which are above-ground graves, or mausoleums. Other options include columbaria, which are buildings with niches for ashes, or simple niches in walls. These sites serve as important locations for funeral ceremonies and rites of passage, which vary based on religious and cultural beliefs.

In many historical European traditions, bodies were placed in mass graves until decomposition was complete. Once the soft tissue disappeared, the bones were exhumed and moved to an ossuary. An ossuary is a container or room used to store skeletal remains. This allowed the original burial site to be reused for new interments. In some urban settings, cemeteries became so crowded that officials added layers of soil on top of the existing ground to create new levels for burial.

Modern sites also frequently include crematoria, which are facilities used to reduce a body to ashes.

Urban cemeteries are located within the heart of a city or town. Historically, these began as churchyards that became crowded and disorganized. Over time, they were redesigned into grids or landscaped spaces to appear more orderly and civilized. In contrast, many modern cemeteries are designed as large, landscaped parks located outside of city centers. In the United States, these rural cemeteries once functioned as recreational areas where people held picnics and carriage races.

Some cemeteries are also monumental, featuring elaborate art and large stone structures.

Archaeologists use cemeteries to study the history of human civilization.

The Taforalt cave in Morocco is possibly the oldest known cemetery. It contained the remains of at least 34 individuals dating back 14,000 to 15,100 years. During the Neolithic period, humans created "grave fields" that provide essential data about prehistoric cultures. For example, the Urnfield culture of the European Bronze Age is defined by its specific burial customs. In the Early Middle Ages, between the 5th and 8th centuries CE, it was common in parts of Europe to reopen graves to manipulate corpses or artifacts. This practice occurred across a broad zone including modern-day France, Germany, and England.

The transition to modern cemetery systems was driven by public health crises.

During the Industrial Revolution, rapid population growth caused existing churchyards to become dangerously overcrowded. In 1831, a cholera epidemic killed 52,000 people in Britain alone. This highlighted the danger of decaying matter infiltrating the water supply. At the time, many believed in the "miasma theory," which suggested that diseases were spread by inhaling gases from decomposing bodies. Consequently, the British Parliament passed a bill in 1832 to encourage large municipal cemeteries outside of London. This led to the creation of the "Magnificent Seven," a group of large cemeteries including Kensal Green, which opened in 1832.

Managing these spaces requires professional design and legal authorization.

John Claudius Loudon was a major figure in this field. He was an urban planner and author who wrote "On the Laying Out, Planting and Managing of Cemeteries" in 1843. His work influenced how architects designed burial grounds to be both sanitary and beautiful. In Britain, many private cemeteries were established by joint-stock companies through Acts of Parliament. The Metropolitan Burial Act of 1852 further expanded this by creating a national system of government-funded municipal cemeteries. This legislation allowed for a massive expansion of burial facilities throughout the late 19th century.

Modern urban cemeteries face unique environmental and chemical challenges.

Because they are often surrounded by buildings, they cannot easily expand. This leads to multiple burials within a single grave. Additionally, the process of embalming can introduce toxic chemicals into the soil. These include arsenic, formaldehyde, mercury, copper, lead, and zinc. Despite these issues, many old urban cemeteries have become vital environmental refuges. Because they are often left undisturbed, they provide habitats for birds and plants that are rare in other parts of the city.
