A mausoleum is an external, free-standing building or standalone structure. It is constructed as a monument to enclose the burial chamber of a deceased person or group of people.

While a mausoleum is often considered a type of tomb, the tomb itself may be located within the larger mausoleum structure. If a monument is built without any remains inside, it is called a cenotaph. These structures serve as lasting symbols of remembrance for individuals of great significance.

The mechanism of a mausoleum involves the protection and enclosure of human remains. A mausoleum encloses a burial chamber either wholly above ground or within a burial vault located below the superstructure. Inside these chambers, the body or bodies may rest within sarcophagi, which are stone coffins, or in interment niches.

Some modern mausolea also function as columbaria. A columbarium is a specific type of mausoleum designed to hold cremated remains in small compartments called cinerary urn niches.

There are several distinct types and arrangements of these monuments. A chapel mausoleum, also known as a mausoleum chapel, is found in many cemeteries. These structures accommodate funeral services, which can involve open or closed caskets, before the traditional interment occurs. In the United States, the term may also refer to a burial vault located beneath a larger facility, such as a church. An example is the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in Los Angeles. This building features a crypt mausoleum in its lower level. This underground space provides 6,000 sepulchral and cinerary urn spaces for interments.

The history of the term is tied to a specific ancient site. The word mausoleum derives from the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, located near modern-day Bodrum in Turkey.

This massive tomb was built for King Mausolus, who was the Persian satrap of Caria. His monument was so impressive that it was named one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Historically, mausolea were large constructions for leaders, but smaller versions eventually became popular among the gentry and nobility. In the Roman Empire, they were often placed in necropoles or along roadsides, such as the via Appia Antica.

Today, mausolea remain significant landmarks with massive scale and visitor numbers. The Anıtkabir in Turkey is the mausoleum of Atatürk, the founder and first President of the Republic of Turkey. This site is a major destination that attracts approximately 3.5 million tourists every year.

Mausolea connect to broader themes of politics, religion, and national identity. They are often built for people who shaped the course of history, such as kings, queens, and presidents. For example, the Mausoleum of Bourguiba in Tunisia honors the nation's first president. In many African nations, mausolea serve as resting places for national heroes and leaders. These buildings act as permanent links between a nation's history and its present citizens, turning individual lives into enduring public symbols.
