An obituary is a written story about a person who has recently died.

Newspapers often share these stories as news articles to honor a life. Most obituaries focus on the good things a person did. However, some editors say they should be balanced accounts. They should tell a true story without being too glowing.

This way, the reader gets a clear picture of the person. There are also lists called necrologies. These are records of deaths for specific groups or fields. They often have very few details but are helpful for history.

There are several ways these notices appear in print. A death notice is a short, paid advertisement. It usually lacks many life details and appears in a specific section. Families can also pay for a memorial advertisement to honor a loved one. This is often done with help from a funeral home. The word obituary can also describe a small booklet at a funeral.

This booklet contains the order of service and reflections on the person's life. People take these booklets home to remember the service.

Many news groups prepare stories before a person actually dies. These are called advance obituaries. They are written for famous people so news can be shared quickly. The New York Times has a large group of these on file. They estimate they have about 1,850 advance obituaries ready. The Washington Post has about 900 of them. The Hollywood Reporter keeps about 800 for people in film and TV.

Writing these early helps journalists meet public interest online.

Writing an advance obituary can take many years of work. Sometimes the writer dies before the subject does. For example, Mel Gussow wrote about Elizabeth Taylor but died in 2005. She died in 2011. Another writer, Michael T. Kaufman, wrote about Henry Kissinger but died in 2010. He wrote the report 14 years before Kissinger died. Some stories take a huge amount of time to finish. The New York Times spent many years working on Fidel Castro's obituary. Work on that story began as far back as 1959.

Sometimes mistakes happen with these news stories. A premature obituary is a report that a person has died when they are still alive. This can happen by accident during a computer change. In 2020, Radio France Internationale accidentally published 100 stories about famous people. This included stories about Queen Elizabeth II and Clint Eastwood. Other times, people might publish a false notice as a prank. Most newspapers have rules to stop this from happening. They only take death notices from reliable sources like funeral homes.
