Most garages protect cars from rain and snow. They also keep vehicles safe from theft or vandalism. Many people use this space for other jobs too. You might find a workshop for painting or woodworking inside. Some people even use them for storage or for fun.

Modern garages use many clever ways to work. Many have large doors for vehicles to enter and exit. Some doors use an electric motor and a small remote. You just press a button to make the door move. These doors often slide up on tracks toward the ceiling.

Some systems even have a detector to stop the door. This sensor stops the movement if something is in the way. In Australia, a common door is the B&D Rolla Door. It is made of strong steel that rolls around a drum. This door has been used since 1956.

History shows how much garages have changed over time. The word garage comes from the French word garer. This word means shelter.

In the early 1900s, people often called them motor houses. Before 1914, many were made of wood and built in factories. Early owners kept cars in garages to stay warm. This helped the engines start more easily in the morning. Later, builders began using metal like corrugated iron. In London, houses started being built with motor houses by 1912.

Garages come in many different sizes and styles. In the United States, a one-car garage is often 12 to 18 feet wide. A two-car garage is usually 20 to 24 feet wide.

Some very large garages can hold four cars. In Australia, a single garage must be at least 3.0 m by 5.4 m. Some people in the rural United States use pole barns. These are made from timber frames with metal coverings. They serve the same purpose as a regular garage.

Today, garages are very important for modern living. In the United States, some people use portable garages. These are made of metal, wood, or vinyl.

They are easier to set up than brick buildings. Some are even modular, meaning they come in two sections. These sections are put together right on the site. Whether attached or detached, garages help us manage our tools and transport. They remain a key part of how we organize our homes.
