The word comes from the French word garer. This means shelter. Most garages hold one or two cars. Some are big enough for three or even four.

Some garages are attached to a house. These have a door to walk straight inside. Other garages are detached. These are separate buildings.

In the past, people called them motor houses. Early owners used them to keep cars warm. This helped the engines start in the morning.

A garage protects cars from rain and snow. It also keeps them safe from theft. Many people use their garage as a workshop. They might do woodworking or painting there. You can also store bikes or lawnmowers in the extra space.

Many doors move with a button. A small remote can open the door. Some doors slide up on tracks. Others are metal doors that tilt up. In the United States, some people use portable garages. These are made of metal, wood, or vinyl. They are easy to set up.
