Houses use roofs to keep rain out. Most modern houses have a kitchen, a living room, and bedrooms.

Some large houses even have a room for fun or a pool.

People living together in a house are called a household. This is often a family. Sometimes, it is a group of roommates. In some places, farm animals like chickens live in the house too.

Humans also build small houses for animals, like birdhouses.

In the past, houses were very different. In the Middle Ages, many people lived in one large manor house. They shared big halls for eating and sleeping. Later, architects made corridors. A corridor is a long hallway. This helped give people more privacy. In the 1700s, Dutch houses became smaller. They focused on the family. They wanted the home to be a place for rest, away from work. Today, technology lets work come inside the house through computers. This makes it harder to separate work from home life.
