People have used baths for thousands of years.

As far back as 3000 B.C., people used water to clean their bodies and souls. In ancient Rome, people went to large public baths called thermae. These were places to relax and talk with friends. In Japan, people still enjoy bathing together in places called sento.

Because bathrooms use a lot of water, they must be built carefully. Walls and floors are often made of glass or ceramic. These materials are easy to clean. Since these surfaces can feel cold, some people use heated floors to stay warm. Lighting must also be bright and safe. It helps people see clearly when they wash or groom.
