Some toilets use water to flush. A typical flush toilet has a ceramic bowl. It also has a cistern, which is a tank that holds water. When you flush, the water carries waste into a drain pipe. This waste is called sewage. In cities, sewage goes to a treatment plant. In other places, it may go to a septic tank.

Other toilets are dry. They do not use water to flush. A pit latrine uses a hole in the ground to hold waste.
