A toilet is a piece of hardware used to collect human waste. This waste includes urine and feces. It also often includes toilet paper. Using toilets helps keep people healthy and clean.

People use different types of toilets depending on where they live. Some toilets are used in private homes. Others are found in public restrooms.

In some places, people have a room for washing and a separate room for the toilet.

Most modern toilets use water to work. A typical flush toilet has a ceramic bowl called a pan. It is connected to a cistern, which is a tank that holds water.

When you flush, water flows from the tank into the bowl. The water moves through a pipe shaped like an upside-down U. This shape helps the waste flow down a drain pipe. The water in the bowl also acts as a barrier. It stops sewer gas from coming back into the building.

Some toilets do not use water at all. These are called dry toilets. A pit latrine uses a hole in the ground to collect waste.

A vault toilet is similar, but it uses a sealed container buried underground. This prevents waste from seeping into the soil. There are also floating toilets. These sit on platforms above the water. They are used in places like Cambodia where people live near water or during floods.

Technology for toilets varies greatly around the world. Vacuum toilets use suction to remove waste. These use very little water, sometimes less than a quarter of a liter.

You can find these on airplanes, buses, and trains. Some modern toilets even have heated seats or can clean themselves. Japan is well known for its advanced toilet technology. In some countries, people use a bidet. A bidet is a tool that uses water to help people stay clean.

Access to toilets is a very important global issue. The United Nations has a goal called Sustainable Development Goal 6. This goal aims to give everyone access to good sanitation and hygiene. This is important because 419 million people have no access to a toilet at all. Without toilets, people may get sick from diseases like cholera or dysentery.

Having clean ways to manage waste helps stop these diseases from spreading.
