Septic tank

A septic tank is a special underground chamber used for cleaning wastewater. It is a type of onsite sewage facility. These systems are very helpful in rural areas. Many homes in these places are not connected to a big city sewer system.

The tanks are usually made from concrete, fiberglass, or plastic. They act as a first step in treating the water from your home. This process is often called primary treatment because it provides moderate cleaning.

Inside the tank, a specific thing happens to clean the water. The wastewater flows into the first chamber through an inlet pipe.

Heavy solids sink to the bottom, while lighter scum floats to the top. In the middle, a dividing wall has openings that let liquid pass through. This liquid then moves into a second chamber for more settling. Inside, an anaerobic environment develops. This means tiny living things work in a space without any oxygen. These tiny things help break down the waste through anaerobic digestion.

Many different designs exist to help the system work better. Some tanks use two chambers to keep things separate. An Imhoff tank is a special two-stage system. In that design, the sludge is digested in its own separate tank. This helps avoid mixing new sewage with the old, digested sludge. Some systems even add air to the liquid before it leaves. This is called an aerobic system. These extra steps can help the liquid flow more smoothly into the next stage.

Most septic tanks are quite large to hold a lot of waste. They usually hold between 4,500 and 7,500 liters of liquid.

If a tank is made of concrete, it can last for about 50 years. However, thick waste called sludge builds up over time. This sludge builds up faster than the tiny living things can break it down. Because of this, a vacuum truck must periodically pump the sludge out.

Some tanks need pumping every few years, while others last 10 to 20 years.

After the tank, the liquid goes to a septic drain field.

This field is a network of pipes often laid in stone-filled trenches. The liquid soaks into the soil to be cleaned even more. The soil traps impurities and lets the extra water soak away. Some water is taken up by plant roots or evaporates into the air. This is similar to how a sponge soaks up a spill. It is a natural way to move water through the ground safely.
