Even tree roots can pose a threat, as they may penetrate concrete tanks or clog the drainage pipes in search of nutrients.

Septic tanks also have connections to broader environmental and atmospheric topics. During the fermentation process, the tank can produce gases like carbon dioxide and methane. Methane is a greenhouse gas with a global warming potential about 25 times larger than carbon dioxide. Additionally, the effluent can contain high levels of nitrogen and phosphates. If these nutrients reach waterways, they can trigger harmful algal blooms. To prevent this, some systems use secondary treatments like constructed wetlands to further clean the water before it enters the environment.
