technology Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A septic tank is an underground chamber. It cleans dirty water from homes. This is helpful in rural areas. These tanks are made of concrete, plastic, or fiberglass.

Most tanks hold 4,500 to 7,500 liters of liquid.

Inside the tank, the water stays still. This lets solids settle to the bottom. A layer of scum floats to the top.

Tiny living things work in the tank. They live in an anaerobic environment. This means they live without oxygen. These tiny things break down the waste. This is called anaerobic digestion.

The liquid flows out to a septic drain field.

This field is a set of pipes in the soil. The soil cleans the water as it soaks in. Some water goes into the ground or to plants.

Over time, thick waste called sludge builds up. It builds up faster than the tiny things can break it down. A vacuum truck must pump it out. This keeps the system working well. If you do not empty it, the tank may clog.

A good tank can last for 50 years.
