life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Your body must get rid of waste. This is called defecation. It happens after your body digests food.

Muscles in the colon move waste through your body. These muscle waves are called peristalsis. The waste moves into the rectum. This is a part that stores the waste. When the rectum gets full, it stretches. This sends a signal to your brain. You then feel the urge to go.

Adults can control this urge. We use muscles called sphincters to hold it in.

The internal sphincter works on its own. The external sphincter is one you control.

Sometimes, things do not go well. If waste moves too slow, you get constipation. This can make your belly feel tight or painful. If waste moves too fast, you get diarrhea. This happens before the body can soak up extra liquid.
