In the large intestine, bacteria break these remains down. This process makes feces leave the body through the anus or a cloaca.

Feces are very useful in nature. They can be used as fertilizer to help plants grow. Some people even burn dried animal dung for fuel.

Many animals eat feces to get energy or health. This is called coprophagia. For example, young elephants eat their mother's feces. This helps them get good bacteria for their gut.

Scientists also study very old feces. These are called coprolites. They are fossilized remains. They show scientists what animals ate long ago. Some feces can even hold DNA. This helps us learn about ancient life.
